When Blocking Your Own Inspiration

Recently, I got sick. It wasn’t just a physical illness, but also a mental one as well.

Gay Hendricks in The Big Leap writes that when one is living in their ‘zone of genius’ they do not get sick for their minds and body are existing in healthy and perfect harmony.

I haven’t been properly ill in years. Getting C19 was never a fear because I do not get sick. Now, I have had self-induced headaches, seasonal allergies, and days of feeling worn out, but nothing like the congested chest, cough, and general fatigue that I have experienced over the last two weeks. The worst part is, I knew I was going to get ill.

My inspirational psyche that had been keeping me regularly writing, propelling my general high from writing retreats, and progressing on the development of my novel — broke. A series of actions, my own and those of others, shattered the delicate layer of joy I was experiencing in having the characters of my book come alive.

Suddenly, I was thrust out of my zone of genius tumbling without gravity into a dark hole wondering if I would regain my center of control. Whilst tumbling, C19 grabbed on and is lingering with its tentacles around my lungs as I practice taking in deep breaths gulping in the light and exhaling the darkness that had taken hold.

My focus has returned, though, and I have a renewed sense of purpose and determination to get back on the writing track. Thankfully, the muses have not left me so my novel writing will soon be continuing.

In the meantime, as I release the remaining hold that this illness has on me, I am working through my reflections to see where I let myself block my inspiration so that I can avoid such steps in the future. No doubt this will not be the last time, but one can hope that next time will be different and require less suffering.

Can anyone else relate?
